Orient Electric's Q2 recovery is real; gross margin is the next test

Orient Electric Limited · Q2 FY2026-27, quarter ended 30 September 2026

In short

Orient Electric reported 25.2% revenue growth and a more than doubled profit for the September 2026 quarter. Its stronger EBITDA and net-cash position warrant attention, while a 251-basis-point gross-margin decline keeps the quality test open.

A faster top line and operating profit

Orient Electric reported Q2 FY27 revenue from operations of ₹879.3 crore against ₹702.6 crore a year earlier, a 25.2% rise. EBITDA increased to ₹56.8 crore from ₹37.9 crore, and profit after tax to ₹27.1 crore from ₹12.1 crore. H1 revenue grew 24.3% to ₹1,829.1 crore, indicating that the improvement extends beyond one quarter.

Both disclosed businesses participated: electrical consumer durables grew 24.9% year on year in Q2 and lighting and switchgear grew 25.7%. The company reported ₹23 crore of net cash and a 34-day working-capital cycle at quarter end.

What management attributes the gains to

Management points to new products, premiumisation, distribution and operating efficiencies. Its presentation says BLDC fans grew 26% and premium products reached 41% of the fans mix. These are company-reported operating indicators; they do not by themselves prove that the margins are permanently higher.

Why the margin story needs a second look

The headline EBITDA margin improved to 6.5% from 5.4% a year earlier, but gross margin fell to 29.0% from 31.5%. Gross profit rose only 15.2% while revenue rose 25.2%. The resulting operating improvement is meaningful, yet the gross-margin compression asks whether pricing, costs or product mix could limit future profit conversion. This is an editorial inference from the reported figures.

The net-cash figure is positive, but small relative to the scale of revenue. The reported ₹23 crore should therefore be treated as a balance-sheet signal to monitor, not a complete assessment of funding resilience or cash generation.

What would make growth more convincing?

A useful next test is whether another quarter maintains revenue growth while recovering gross margin and sustaining the higher EBITDA margin. In Q2, gross margin was 29.0%, down 251 basis points year on year, even as EBITDA margin rose 106 basis points. The current filing cannot establish which trend will dominate over a full year.

Risks and research posture

Sequentially, Q2 revenue declined 7.4% and EBITDA 14.7% from Q1, while the gross margin remained below the year-earlier level. Seasonality may matter, but it does not remove the need to track demand, pricing and input costs. Orient is an operating-recovery watchlist candidate, not a conclusion that the stock is attractively valued or that the recent pace will persist.
