EPS (earnings per share)
EPS is a company's net profit divided by the number of its shares. It is the profit that belongs to one share.
Example: net profit of ₹100 crore and 10 crore shares give EPS of ₹10.
- Quarterly EPS covers three months; the P/E ratio uses the total of the last four quarters.
- A bonus issue or split increases the number of shares, so EPS falls even when profit does not. Compare EPS on the same share count.
- Compare a quarter with the same quarter a year earlier (YoY), because many businesses are seasonal.
- One-time gains or losses can make a single quarter's EPS misleading.
